This research project entitled “PRIBREF” has received the support of the Belgian Federal Ministry of Economy and of the Belgian standardization body (NBN). As a part of this research, the exothermic profile method is studied. This method relies on the monitoring of the progress of the exothermic hydration reactions within a mix, by a precise and careful measure of the sample temperature evolution. Whereas the test concept is straightforward, some issues remain pending and the variety of test conditions encountered in the scientific literature clearly stress the need for a standardization of this method.

Schematic presentation of interactions between standardization bodies [3] In view of the globalization of the refractory market, the need for harmonized documents worldwide has become of upmost importance. In this context, it is worth stressing the fact that in order to support the Unique Market, the publication of a CEN document implies the withdrawal of any conflicting national standard.

In some cases, digital image correlation (DIC) methods can be coupled to mechanical tests to obtain strain fields. Such results are particularly interesting to observe and to understand damage processes. As damage is a major characteristic of the monolithic castable behaviors, links are established between the thermomechanical behavior and damage mechanisms. Two main scales are taken into account for damage characterization: the macroscopic and the microscopic ones. Main mechanisms that are considered deal with microcracking, macrocracking, debonding and cavitation.
