The data on the composition and the information conveyed by the children's two-element utterances provided a more complex and articulate picture of the role that gestures played at both 16 and 20 months of age. First, we found that at both 16 and 20 months the most frequent type of two-element utterances were crossmodal combinations of a gestural and a vocal element, which also increased significantly from 16 to 20 months (Mean N at the two age points: 15 and 33). These utterances were in fact significantly more frequent not only of two-gesture utterances (almost absent from the children's production), but also of two-word utterances, which began to be consistently produced only at 20 months.
