It isn’t easy to prepare for the next century because it’s almost impossible to guess the secondary effects of even the changes we foresee, much less of those we can’t” (1996, p. 286). To be at the cutting edge of business today is to be in the business of inventing and disclosing new worlds. To understand and attune ourselves to this process, we need to question the rationalist assumptions of business as simply a means to an end. We need to move towards an understanding of the logic of seeing work in new ways, which is an artistic logic, involving passion, commitment, wrestling with the unknown, and the development of new visions that are characteristic of the artist.

However, he shied away from any reference to the term “philosophy” because, according to Michael Finley, his “publisher painted a picture of the marketplace success of books with the word philosophy in the title” (Finley, 1995). What’s wrong with the word “philosophy”? How should we weigh up the relationship between the demands of the marketplace and doing justice to a lack within management? If the market rejects the word “philosophy”, and management could benefit from an understanding of it, should it still be rejected?

33). Dynamics of discontinuity The processes of questioning our assumptions and defamiliarisation are central elements of the philosophical experience. They are also central to an understanding of capitalism, and that market practice which operates in terms of the tension between supply and demand. Questioning the habits and conventions of conducting commerce are not new in capitalism. In fact, destruction is a central dimension of capitalism and characterises the essence of capitalism. This perspective underlies the work of the economist Joseph Schumpeter, who believed that capitalism is a system that is constantly transforming itself, and in doing so, it transforms the habits of doing business.
