Raising the energy level in the body is not enough to enable deep psychic change and growth. As body psychotherapists we know that discharge of aﬀects can be therapeutic if it resolves ﬁxed patterns. We also know that discharging feelings and ‘getting rid of them’ can be a defence. A sense of self can be restored when sensation and feelings are rediscovered and when the client is also able to regulate them internally, sometimes containing them, other times expressing them appropriately. In addition to the more process-oriented, phenomenological approach, bodily interventions supplement the verbal psychoanalytic approach well, given that defences manifest on a physical and psychic level.
However, most clients come to therapy because of suﬀering. They do not need added stress or attack. Confrontation is only useful for uncovering painful traumas and conﬂicts from the past if some transformation and healing is possible. Increasing suﬀering through psychotherapy can retraumatise a client and create a secondary armour which is much harder to undo.
