E. feelings of compassion, dignity, joy, sadness or longing; it includes the arms and hands as an extension of the chest. The diaphragm, as the main breathing muscle, plays a vital function in holding back deeper feelings rising up from the pelvis and belly. The belly segment with its vital organs and colon is seen as the energy ‘centre’ and place of wellbeing. Holding the belly in chronic contraction has the effect of numbing stronger primal feelings such as rage, grief and terror. The pelvic segment (pelvic floor, genitals, uterus and ovaries, legs and feet) generates and holds our sexual feelings, erotic desires and longings, our vitality and basic trust in life.

Raising the energy level in the body is not enough to enable deep psychic change and growth. As body psychotherapists we know that discharge of affects can be therapeutic if it resolves fixed patterns. We also know that discharging feelings and ‘getting rid of them’ can be a defence. A sense of self can be restored when sensation and feelings are rediscovered and when the client is also able to regulate them internally, sometimes containing them, other times expressing them appropriately. In addition to the more process-oriented, phenomenological approach, bodily interventions supplement the verbal psychoanalytic approach well, given that defences manifest on a physical and psychic level.

However, most clients come to therapy because of suffering. They do not need added stress or attack. Confrontation is only useful for uncovering painful traumas and conflicts from the past if some transformation and healing is possible. Increasing suffering through psychotherapy can retraumatise a client and create a secondary armour which is much harder to undo. An initial and ongoing assessment of the client’s ego strength and ‘psychological mindedness’ needs to confirm that the client can benefit from this way of working.
