There are many examples of such clashing norms that are often invoked by competing sides in the international arena. Ideological clashes, such as the ones between the Western and Eastern blocs of the Cold War, often pitted multiple norms against each other. The norm of sovereignty has been used very often to challenge norms such as the ones underlying the promotion of human rights and democratization across states. Sovereignty has also been invoked when challenging the promotion of norms of peace keeping or nuclear non-proliferation.
